Sustainable Architecture | Biocities | Biodesign
A speculative bio-design approach architecture for bio-cities / bio-Melbourne collaborated with ARUP Melbourne. An unprecedented hot summer affected by climate change impacts, where temperature hitting 50°C in the future posting a huge threat to the busiest pedestrian-oriented street in Melbourne CBD. This project redesigned the canopies and experience in Bourke Street Mall. A selected native heat-tolerant moss with hydrophilic bacteria in soil secure by modular tiles clad all over the high thermo-mass structures. Irrigation keeps the moss wet, with the help of wind tunnel-shaped columns collect wind to the walkway to achieve a passive cooling effect. An elevated platform allows a 360° view of the heritage building facades along the street, and a bridge leads to an amphitheater to enjoy live performances by the buskers, chilling at the rooftop bars to acknowledge the Melburnians culture and identity of the street. This project was part of the exhibition for Melbourne Design Week 2020.
