The Ripples is a series of sound-responsive floor lights proposed for the Bourke Street Mall pathway in Melbourne. It aims to acknowledge the intensity of social interaction and activities and is inspired by the buskers that enliven the street. The use of animated light is meant to enhance the atmosphere and also a sense of security at night. Sounds captured by a microphone are transformed into moving light, their overall brightness driven by the volume detected. A temperature sensor also modulates the warm/ cool hues of the light to project a sensation of warmth or cool air in extreme weather conditions.
